We are disappointed to report that our picnic bench has vanished from the Raincliffe Gates car park.

It was there one minute and gone the next.

We can only assume someone decided it looked better in their own garden than it did in the public space.

It is a real shame and very disappointing for everyone who enjoyed using it.

If anyone in the community has any information, we’d truly appreciate you reaching out.

It was incredibly moving to see our community come together to connect, take care of their well-being, and celebrate the memory of our much-loved colleague, Claire.

For those who couldn't make it—or for those who want to revisit the spot—we are so proud to share these pictures of Claire’s memorial bench.

This bench now stands as a permanent part of the woods.

It is a space for anyone to take a moment out of their day, sit quietly in nature, and find a bit of peace.

Take some time out to ground yourself, breathe in the woodland air, and enjoy gentle activities designed to boost your mental and physical health.

A Special Acoustic Performance:

We are incredibly touched to welcome local group The Blowins, who have generously offered to play a free acoustic gig in the woods.

In Memory of Claire Rodway:

This acoustic performance is dedicated to the memory of our much-loved colleague, Claire Rodway. While the gig is free to attend, we will be welcoming donations at the event in her honor.

Step Into Well-Being (A Note on Getting Here):

In the spirit of well-being—and because our woodland car parks have very limited space!

We are asking attendees to leave the car behind if possible.

If you are able, please consider walking up to the woods from town or utilising other nearby parking areas.

Not only will this ensure we don't overcrowd the site, it’s also the perfect way to kickstart your afternoon of wellness with some extra steps in nature.

Stunning woodland scenes in Raincliffe Woods near Scarborough.

The visit took place on Thursday 26th March 2026 as part of their 1st year course.

Their studies include a mandatory module on Healthy Environments which covers the following:

"This module aims to introduce you to the impact that the environment has on health and wellbeing.

"‘Environment’ is used broadly, and encompasses built and natural environments, rural and urban and different geographical/physical localities, to include socio-economic and political variables.

"You will examine the changing environment, including the impact of climate change. You will also explore how we can care for our natural environments, including the importance of safe and accessible outdoor spaces for all ages.

"You will examine the impact of travel on the environment and discuss sustainable travel benefits for individuals and society."

We met at Throxenby Mere where we were able to demonstrate sustainable travel access issues and connecting to different socio economic groups.

We were able to show how pressures from the urban areas impact on the natural environment.

Our team could also show how community groups and volunteers come together to maintain and manage the environment.

Volunteering in itself offers benefits to health and wellbeing.

We were able show examples of how one groups healthy outdoor activity had negative impact upon other users and upon the natural environment.

This visit provided an opportunity to translate theory in to practical actions.

Also it could help identify the barriers to delivering the health & wellbeing benefits the woodland environment offers.

It was great to see the students engaging in the woodland environment and asking searching questions about the woodlands and managing the demands upon the volunteers.

Of course, we look forward to next year's students visiting Raincliffe Woods.

The students are studying Health & Social Care and beginning a new module on Healthy Environments.

We met at Throxenby Mere.

This is our gateway to the North York Moors National Park

We discussed access to the woodlands and barriers to those without their own transport.

Walking from the Mere we experienced the difficulties where footpaths are boggy and blocked by fallen trees.

We were also able to discuss the difficulties of maintaining such an environment and the different pressures user can create.

For example, balancing activities against the sensitive environment.

The visit provided real life examples of the challenges delivering wellbeing experiences, maintaining a safe environment and the complex relationships that support natural woodlands.

We look forward to hosting similar groups in the future.
