So this is an iconic picture of the stunning prehistoric megalith we all know.
Did you know that we have our own prehistoric remains in Raincliffe Woods?
Probably the earliest visible feature surviving in the woods is a Bronze Age tumulus or burial mound around 3,500 years old situated on the crest of the slope where Raincliffe meets the north end of Forge Valley.
It is protected as a scheduled ancient monument (Historic England Monument no. 65099) but a hollow on top of the mound indicates it has been dug into in the past though no record survives of what was found.
The base of the burial mound on the side nearest to the hill top has been cut away by what may be trial workings for a quarry.
(Taken from the Scarborough Archaeological & Historical Society report following their survey of the woods between 2015-2017 with thanks).
A date for your diary the Society will be leading a walk and talk on October 13th. Details to follow.
